Japanese Language
Japanese 1010: Elementary Japanese
Taught in English, this course introduces basic Japanese phrases and grammar, with students learning hiragana, katakana, and some simple kanji. Students participate in conversations about daily life, personal interests, and culture in Japanese.

Japanese 1020: Elementary Japanese
Taught partially in English, partially in Japanese, this course is a continuation of Japanese 1010.Students learn additional phrases, grammar, vocabulary, and kanji used to ask and discuss simple questions about interests and daily life.

Japanese 2010: Intermediate Japanese
Virtual abroad
Taught in Japanese, this course was taken through Kansai University in a virtual study abroad program. Students discussed and practiced a variety of mid-level grammatical points, learned Kansai dialect, and worked with Kansai students on learning various cultural topics. Students ended the course with a project about an aspect of Japanese culture, which was viewed by Kansai students.

Japanese 2020: Intermediate Japanese
Taught in Japanese, this course is a continuation of Japanese 2010. An emphasis was placed on learning and practicing various levels of polite and humble speech. Students continue to further their vocabulary and kanji to use in projects and in class discussions.

Japanese 3050: Composition and Conversation
Taught in Japanese, this course has students read and discuss complex readings in Japanese, as well as write papers in Japanese about various topics. Complex grammar and kanji continue to be taught.

Japanese 3060: Composition and Conversation
Taught in Japanese, this course is a continuation of Japanese 3050. Students continue reading and discussing works in Japanese. Students lead debate panels, give presentations, and write sophisticated essays in Japanese.
Language 3030: Study Abroad Transfer
This course was taken during a study abroad to Japan. During this course, students participated in an intense Japanese language course at Kansai Univerity.
Culture
Anthropology 2010: Introduction to Anthropology
In this course, students are introduced to the different areas of study in anthropology. Students learn the basic methods of data collection anthropologists use to use in various projects throughout the course.
Language 3000: Introduction to Linguistics
Students learn about the structure of languages and universal aspects of them. All the basics of linguistic studies are introduced and discussed in examples.
History 3300: History of Modern China
Chinese history from mid 1800-Today is studied in this history course. This course looks at politics, geography, religion, and western influence that shaped the path of Chinese history. Students write multiple papers analyzing and discussing historical contexts.

Japanese 3070: Japanese Civilization I
Taught in English, this course allows students to learn and research about various aspects of Japanese culture. In this particular section, students studied aspects of Japanese culture and how those influenced Japan's soft power.
Japanese 4010: Japanese Literature in Translation
Taught in English, students study works in Japanese from all eras, discuss common themes across Japanese media, and write essays analyzing various aspects of Japanese literature.

Japanese 4030: Internship in Japan
Taken in Japanese, this course is a place holder for students taking an internship in Tokyo during study abroad. This month long internship is with a Japanese company, and an essay in Japanese in required at the end of the internship.
Japanese 4560: Japanese Film
Taught in English, students learn basic film terminology to facilitate conversations and papers about Japanese films. Classic directors like Ozu, Kurosawa, Mizoguchi are studied as well as modern directors like Miyazaki.
Japanese 4990: Specialty Topics in Japanese
Taught in English, this course delves into aspects of Japanese pop-culture, including manga, music, anime, films, and online writings. Students held discussions in class about the material and created a final analysis of a topic.
Poetry
English 3460: Introduction to Creative Writing: Poetry
This course introducing students to literary devices used in poetry and taught students how to participate in a workshop. Students submitted and critiqued each other’s works in addition to published works.

English 4460: Poetry Workshop
Students work with each other and the professor to host a weekly workshop for students' works and published works. Different styles of poetry are studied throughout the course.
English 2140: American Literature
This course focused on American poetry, with students analyzing famous authors of the 1900’s and later. Students worked on learning literary devices to apply in analysis papers.

English 4220: Topics in Writing Poetry
This course acts as a workshop and further study of modern poets and styles. Students complete readings, discussions, and submit work for various workshops throughout the course.
Analysis and Rhetoric
English 1030: Composition and Rhetoric
This course taught students the basics of rhetorical analysis to apply in discussion and work. Students completed multiple rhetorical analyses during the course.
English 4980: Writing Center Theory and Practice
This course is a training course to work for the on campus writing lab. Students study rhetoric
around writing centers as well as held discussions about race, gender, sexuality, privilege, and connotations around and in writing labs.
Communications 2500: Public Speaking
In this course, students learn how to successfully write and perform speeches of both formal and colloquial varieties. Students practice different techniques of public speaking with the speeches
they write in class.
Applied Music 1510: Applied Music
This is a one-on-one lesson on vocal instruction in which students prepare pieces to perform in lesson or in a concert.
Theatre 2900: Script Analysis
Students learn about structure and aspects of plays to apply in various analyses. Students use plays read in class to practice their analysis skills to write their own formal analysis of a play.
